Informed by his continued exploration of abstract painting, Mildura based artist Justin Andrews will construct a large scale geometric wall relief. Splintering from a central axis, a non-linear framework of timber armatures form the base for an explosion of vibrant geometric panels.

Old dirtbike magazines stacked upon a plinth. The intersection of youthful desires and the institution of high art collide in the visually arresting work of Lane Cormick. Revolving on the 'aura' of growing up in the Western suburbs, Cormick re-animates the desires from his youth with surreal objectivity, using grotesque drawing and sculpture as an endgame to constructing a personal museology.

Kate Fulton's work invites the viewer in to a conceptual space beyond what can be seen. The relocation of a physically constructed hole in her studio floor, to a hole in the floor beneath a strategically placed piece of cardboard at the George Paton Gallery, playfully opens up a critical dialogue in relation to truth, democracy and what we are willing to believe.

It gives me great pleasure in having the opportunity to present the work of Rossana Martinez (New York) and Toby Paterson (Glasgow) in Australia for the first time, alongside local artists Julia Gorman, Estelle Ihász, Masato Takasaka, John Nixon and the late Charles Wilton. New Work, at Ocular Lab Inc., brings together a multitude of exciting and dynamic new artworks that experiment with form and space within an expanded field of abstraction and spatial configuration.

For three weekends in November, the Lab will be ablaze with vibrancy and energy, engulfed by thrash metal texta drawings, geometric perspex relief works, monochromatic silver paintings, primary coloured cashmere arrows, intricately sewn cotton on pink board, a lurid vinyl wall drawing, a kaleidoscopic photogram, and a table of pottery from the 1960's & 70's.

New Work: Expanded and Compressed brings together challenging and insightful new projects by seven contemporary visual artists who 'expand and compress' their artistic practice across painting, drawing, video, photography, sculpture, installation and conceptual based practices.

While this provocative exhibition aims to present and highlight the medium of photography and video within the selected artists work, it also aims to accept that the use of photography and video is not used in isolation within a dynamic multi-layered contemporary art practice. New Work: Expanded and Compressed will present an exciting and intriguing range of innovative work, from large scale geometric wall drawings to intimate perceptive journeys of form and space.
